On November 17, 2022, Quanisha Ball was tragically killed at the corner of Scott Blvd. and Blackmon Drive in Decatur, GA. She was walking her usual route to work at Emory Winship Cancer Institute when she was fatally struck by a person driving a Dodge Charger with Florida license plates. This heartbreaking incident left an indelible mark on her family, causing immense trauma and grief. The situation worsened when Quanisha’s mother, Courtney Thompkins, learned how the police and DeKalb County handled her daughter’s death, leading the family into a fight for justice.

In October of 2024, Courtney created QCares Foundation to keep Quanisha’s legacy alive and to use her experience to help prevent roadway injuries and deaths. The foundation has held two Q’s Awareness Walks and has met with Atlanta Propel, Calm Decatur, Families for Safer Streets, BikePGH, Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh, Vision Zero, police, and first responders.
